A4E member Jürgen Knödlseder presented a rigorous estimate of the carbon footprint of astronomy research in 2022. This work put the per-astronomer carbon footprint significantly higher than previous research, that did not include infrastructure. Jürgen followed up with another publication last year in which he extrapolated emission scenarios for astronomy research and saw little evidence that the required drastic emission reductions will soon be realised in astronomy. His talk on the subject at our 5 year anniversary meeting (Recording) spurred an intense discussion, for which there wasn’t enough room at the anniversary meeting. We are therefore very happy that Jürgen will be available to follow up on the topics that we couldn’t fully discuss.
