The A4E-aligned group centered around high energy physics, Sustainabe HECAP+ (SH+, https://www.hecap.eco/ ), began in 2025 a major initiative working with arXiv.org to propose the Physics subcategory: “Physics and Environmental Sustainability (physics.env-sust)“. This will allow papers focussed on the sustainability of physics and astrophysics-related research, e.g., on life cycle assessment or sustainable design, to be more easily identified. Having this category set up will make it significantly easier for anyone interested in work on sustainability issues within any subfield of physics to search for and browse topics in this subject area on the arxiv.

Our group has done a careful analysis of papers already on the arxiv that either could be cross-listed into the new subcategory, or actually submitted there as their primary subcategory, and find a significant fraction of papers already being posted could be described in one or the other of these ways.

To set up the official subcategory, arxiv is asking for commitments from a significant group of researchers as well as professional societies to submit papers using the proposed subject class to show the community’s support for it. This includes agreements to cross-list a number of initial submissions to get the subject class going. SH+ is thus requesting for any physicists or astronomers who would support this effort to complete this short 3-minute form. You can sign on as an individual, or representing a larger group or author list.
